Consortium for Small-scale Modeling

The Consortium for Small-scale Modeling (COSMO) was formed in October 1998. Its general goal is to develop, improve and maintain a non-hydrostatic limited-area atmospheric model, to be used both for operational and for research applications by the members of the consortium.

The original model used then and until 2022, was also called "COSMO" and within a licence, it has been used for operational and research applications by other national (hydro-)meteorological services, universities and research institutes.

The COSMO science plan called for a harmonization of development of the consortium and the ICON (ICOsahedral Nonhydrostatic) model in the time horizon of 2020-21. Further development of the COSMO model was reduced since 2019 and the final version (v3.0) was released in 15 Dec. 2021. The COSMO consortium members switched to ICON after 2022, so development and testing of new features are now restricted to ICON. (see some links related to that transition)

The original COSMO-model licence is not available anymore (as the model reached its end and has been replaced by ICON). Now, the COSMO Consortium offers support licenses for the ICON model. For further information, please contact icon-support[at]cosmo-model.org. In the exceptional case you still need a cosmo-model license, please contact the same address.
