GRIB Data Format used for the COSMO-Model System

Reading and writing data from or to disk requires a special data format. To be able
to exchange data with other scientists or forecasters, a machine-independent data format
should be used. Two different data formats are implemented in the INT2LM and in the
COSMO-Model:
- GRIB:
GRIB is the name of a data representation form defined by the
World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
It is mainly used by national weather services for the exchange of data.
- NetCDF: (Network Common Data Format)
NetCDF is a set of software libraries and machine indenpendet data formats that
support the creation, access, and sharing of array-oriented scientific data. This format
is mainly used by the Climate Community.
